How Often Should We Practice?
Again, this answer largely depends on your goals and how serious you are with wrestling. While time doesn't always necessarily equal improvement, it does have a lot to do with it.
We have seven days in any given week. If you want to be a great wrestler, you should be looking to get some form of practice for 4-6 days of that. Competition before high school should always be looked at as practice. You should only ever be treating it as a "competition" during states. Tournaments are the perfect time to practice new moves in a less than ideal sitation (a real match).
Why Not Every Day?
One day per week must always be reserved for rest. We don't care how good you are or how tough you think you are. If you consistently practice 7 days per week your workouts will start to become counter-productive and the risk for injury will consistently rise. Even in college, it's NCAA rule that you are only allowed to wrestle 6 days out of the week.
It's often the sign of a good and responsible coach, who when he sees his wrestler uncharacteristically frustrated, to tell him to go home and take a day off. Otherwise, an injury will likely happen, which can put you out for months. While you're injured, your best opponents are getting better. You don't have time for that.
Red Hawk Practices
When it comes to our room and our comprehensive lesson plan, you will gain the most progress if you sign up and come to all 4 available days in the week. We go over a ton of technique, and it takes at least 3 times through the lessons until you become comfortable enough to use even a fraction of the moves.
It's fairly simple, the more you come the better you'll get.
Tournaments With Red Hawk
Go to as many tournaments as possible. In order to get used to a match situation and be able to perform you need a lot of time to acclimate to the change in scenario.
At practice there is no consequence for failure, so wrestlers have an easier time taking chances. In matches there are consequences, but they must learn how to wrestle as if there aren't. They must put everything out there during a match and because of that wrestle better than they would in practice.
Usually when someone is so afraid of losing, they hesitate, and end up losing. Through sheer numbers, you will get them past that fear. It will be just another match.
